In this episode I show you how to make a simple wooden saw vase based off the design from the Norse Woodsmith blog. A saw vise is an essential piece of equipment for saw sharpening. Without one it’s virtually impossible to support the saw correctly while filing the teeth. Unfortunately, buying a new or used vise is easily the most expensive part of getting started in an otherwise cheap endeavor. Building a shop made vise is a workable alternative that lowers the barrier to entry.
Hardware Used
- 2 x Cam Action Hold Down
- 2 x 1 inch hinge from the home center
Saw Sharpening Links
A great resource for leaning hand tool techniques. The most recent lesson (semester 2 lesson 1) is all about sharpening and has some great info on saw sharpening at the end.
Vintage Saws’ Saw Filing–A Beginner’s Primer
A veritable treatise on saw filing with the beginner in mind. This is how I learned to sharpen saws.
Hand Saw Sharpening DVD by Tom Law
Lots of good information on saw sharpening. This is obviously a transfer from VHS and the video quality suffers here. Hard to get a good visual feel of the process.
Another great video!
I have never seen the CA glue used to hold on a hinge trick before and that is exactly why I love watching videos made by regular woodworkers like myself you dont see that what seem to be insignificant steps a person takes in the TV shows but are often the most important aspects which make what seem to be mundane tasks go so much easier and smoother.
In the past I have always had headaches setting hinges and keeping the darn things still while I try to mark and drill my pilot holes and keep bumping or hitting it with the pencil and it all moves out of alignment it had never dawned on me to use a CA glue to hold it in place while I did that task! ah my hinge setting will be so much easier from now on thanks to you and your video!
Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul, I picked up the CA glue hinge trick from the wall hanging cabinet guild build.
Cheers,
Erik
Great video, Erik. Nothing can beat the feeling of sawing with a freshly self-sharpened saw. I like your style. It is kinda like Roy meets The Bubinga Whisperer. Your shop is as cluttered as Roy’s but you’ve got Marc’s delivery style. I can’t wait to see what you do with your new creation.
Thanks for putting together such an informative video.
David
Thanks David. Marc and Roy are good company to keep.
vow, intriguing stuff Erik.. nicely done video
